Helping Young People Move Past Fear & False Identity

Helping Young People Move Past Fear & False Identity

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST

By Seth & Alicia Williams

We get to experience a deep level of discipleship with young adults here at The Inn during the summer. One truth we address time and time again is that our behaviors are a reflection of our beliefs. We challenge young people to recognize the lies, fears and false identities that inform their behaviors so they can take those thoughts captive.

We probably sound like broken records because we say ‘Take every thought captive’ so much.

We all need to learn how to discern the voice of the Lord and the voice of the enemy, so we encourage the young ones in our care to reflect on the narrative that is playing in their minds. Our goal is to pinpoint the root cause of their actions or emotions and help them figure out what is going on inside.

Getting to the Root

Young women are often afraid of looking weak, especially if they did not receive the affirmation of a father. They might feel like they have to prove they are as strong as any guy. The truth is, women are endowed with a strength from the Lord that is unique to their gender.

Godly feminism doesn’t look like competition with masculinity. It’s a beautiful complement.

Young men are commonly afraid of failure, and this leads to passivity and being stuck. The world seeks to keep our young men very tame. Society has told us that fathers are not needed, and this attitude has produced lackluster, lukewarm manhood.

Proverbs 28:1 is a call to young men in this hour: “The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” It’s time to rise up in the strength of the Lord!

The Remedy for Fear is Love

So how do we deal with fear? Simply give your heart over to the Lord and say, “Father, love me.” There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. (1 John 4:18)

Our younger generation desperately needs mentors to speak truth and encouragement into their lives. There is so much time to redeem and so much opportunity to restore. It is never too late to change paths and live a different way. There is always a reason to hope!
