Ministry is a unique calling that requires leaders to pour themselves out continually for others, yet it often feels impossible to step away and rest. The demands of leadership can be overwhelming, pushing many pastors and Christian leaders toward burnout.
Taking time to rest and reconnect with God isn’t just important, it is essential for the long-term health of Christian leaders.
His Yoke Is (Not Feeling) Easy
In Matthew 11:30, Jesus said, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” But for Christians in leadership, especially those in ministry positions, this yoke sometimes feels anything but light. Research from the Barna Group suggests that only one in three pastors is considered “healthy” regarding their overall well-being. Further, an astounding 40% of pastors are at high risk for burnout, with 38% seriously considering quitting their work altogether. While there are many reasons for these disheartening statistics—unrealistic workloads, poor work-life balance, or constant interpersonal conflicts—there is hope for the weary Christian leader.
Jesus’ Rhythm of Rest
Just a few verses earlier, Jesus extended an invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Leaders, before you push through with the yoke you’ve been given, pause, come to Jesus and rest.
This practice of setting down your work and dedicating intentional time to rest in the Lord was modeled by Jesus Himself: “But Jesus often slipped away to be alone so He could pray” (Luke 5:16, NCV). He knew the importance of setting aside His work—even His calling to serve—and communing with the Father.
This wasn’t a one-time escape but a regular rhythm of retreating, recentering, and refueling to better serve those He was called to.
Entrusting Your Work to the Spirit
As a leader, whether in business, ministry, or a pastoral role, it often feels impossible to step away from your responsibilities. However, as a Christian leader, it’s important to remember that you’re not relying on your own strength in the first place. You are filled with the Holy Spirit, the Living Water, who continually renews and sustains you as you pour yourself out. This is great news!
It means you can confidently take time to rest, knowing that the Holy Spirit is still at work, caring for what already belongs to Him and ensuring the work continues even in your absence.
